A few weeks ago, in the photography course, we experimented with taking pictures of glass, avoiding reflections coming from the light source(s). The setup you see in the second picture was used to get the  above result. The color is generated by putting a red plastic between the soft box you see at the bottom, and the semi transparent curved plastic. Unfortunately, the glasses were not that shiny :). If you want to avoid the darker background at the top, you have to add an extra light source behind the semi transparent curved plastic.
